[SLL] questions about security cameras setup

I have a friend who needs to install some security cameras in his offices.

What software and what type of hardware do you suggest for a low cost
solution?

Any good stores around Seattle that sell cameras? (I am thinking Fry's
should have a big selection.)

We are thinking we could use some USB cameras.

It would be nice to have remote access to the recorded video streams and
live video for the different cameras.

Any links I should read?

Maybe around five years ago, I used Slackware Linux with some parallel
port based camera to make snapshots. But I am looking for a video instead
of still pictures. And this is more important than my previous goal: let
me know if it was snowing :)
